Public Universities In Kenya

University education in Kenya is guided by the Universities Act 210B of 2012. This Act establishes the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) which is mandated to promote the objectives of university education, namely the development, processing, storage and dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of mankind.

Commission for higher education is the body mandated by law to accredit universities in Kenya both public and private and also accredit all programs being undertaken at the universities in Kenya.

Public universities in Kenya used to be established by individual Acts of parliament but that has been consolidated into the Universities Act 210B of 2012.

Public Universities are funded by taxpayer’s money and admit their students through the Joint Admissions Board (JAB).
