PayPal is an international payment platform that can be used to pay for goods online, used to pay for entertainment’s and subscriptions such as Netflix and a host of other services online. Previously it was only possible to load money into your PayPal account through a Visa card. However this changed when Safaricom partnered with PayPal to link M-pesa with PayPal.

You can easily deposit money to your PayPal account or withdraw money equally fast from your PayPal account straight to your M-pesa account. Here we look at how to do it. 

How To Link M-pesa To PayPal

The steps outlined below are assuming that you already have a PayPal account and is only a guide on how to connect the two. If you do not have a PayPal account; Click here to open a PayPal account

After you have created PayPal account, follow the following steps to link it with M-pesa

  1. Go to PayPal  mobile money page found on this link; https://www.paypal-mobilemoney.com/m-pesa You can as well type the link in a browser.
  2. Log to your account using your PayPal username and password
  3. Read through the PayPal’s terms and conditions for the service and agree to them.
  4.  You will need to add your registered M-PESA number that you want to link with PayPal
  5. You will receive a verification code from PayPal sent to your M-PESA number
  6. You need to key in the verification code to verify the number and complete the linking process

How To Top Up PayPal Using M-pesa

After linking your registered M-pesa line to pay pal, you may want to top up the balance in your PayPal account to enable you transact. Now you will be able to do it directly from the M-pesa menu. 

It is good to log in to your PayPal account and use the currency converter option to know exactly how much you need to top up in Kenya shillings. This will be useful as PayPal will be use the currency conversion rate that will be used to convert the money. You may use your own conversion and later realize you have underfunded your account. 

The PayPal paybill number is 800 088. Here are the steps to follow. 

  1. Go to M-pesa lipa na M-pesa
  2. Select paybill and enter paybill number 800 088
  3. Enter your phone number that is linked to PayPal as your account number
  4. Enter the amount you wish to top up
  5. Enter Mpesa pin.
  6. You will get a notification message from Safaricom on the success of the payment. M-pesa will also send you a message confirming the payment to the paybill number.

This transaction is not free and M-pesa paybill charges will apply. 

How To Withdraw From PayPal To M-Pesa

For those who work online in Kenya and get paid through PayPal, the good news is that you can now withdraw money from PayPal directly to your M-pesa account. The only requirement is that you have the two systems linked as outlined above. The currency in the PayPal account is usually in dollars but when you withdraw you will receive the money in Kenya shillings. PayPal will use their own exchange rates to convert the currency.

Here is how you withdraw money from PayPal to M-pesa

  1. Login to your PayPal account. 
  2. Select the withdrawal option
  3. Enter the amount you wish to withdraw. Click withdraw.
  4. You will received money into your M-pesa account that is linked to PayPal. Mpesa maximum transaction limits will apply.
