How To Apply for NTSA Smart Driving License

Gone are the days when the driving license used to be a booklet. It used to be issued by KRA long before creation of NTSA. Every year, you would que at KRA offices to renew the DL. You would pay and get a small receipt that showed you have paid the renewal and for how long the renewal is valid.

In come the NTSA (National Transport and Safety Board) with new technologies and they changed the way we obtained, renewed and replaced our driving licenses. They introduced smart driving licenses that have a chip that contains data about the driver, the number of accidents caused, year of issues and the class of vehicles he is licensed to drive. It is an offence to drive a vehicle without a valid driving license in Kenya.

How Long Does Smart DL Take To Process

The NTSA is the sole licensing agency for all drivers in Kenya. Considering the number of vehicles in our roads and the number of Kenyans hitting the adult age, it will take between 21days (1 week) to 30 days (1month) to process the smart DL after the biometrics have been taken.

The old booklet driving licenses will still be in use until such a time that NTSA will have issued smart DLs to the majority of the drivers. But its good to renew on time.

It will cost you Ksh3,050 to apply for the smart DL. You can use NTSA paybill number 206 206 to pay for the license. Note that the Paybill transaction charges will apply. This will cater for the smart card and a renewal for 3 years. Remember to carry your original driving license when you visit NTSA for biometrics and while collecting the smart DL.
