What is NTSA TIMS?

NTSA or National Transport & Safety Authority is the government entity that is concerned with ensuring safety and sanity in all road matters in Kenya. In order to access the motoring services by NTSA, you have to register and have a TIMS or Transport Integrated Management System account. This account is created online and some of the services accesses through the portal include:

1. Motor vehicle registration

This involves registration motor vehicles that are new and old. It also involves joint registration of motor vehicles, trailers, tractors and motorbikes.

2. Motor vehicle inspection booking

All vehicles in Kenya must undergo inspection to ascertain they are roadworthy and meet the safety standards set. Unroadworthy vehicles have been know to contribute to road accidents

3. Motor vehicle transfer of ownership

This is when you buy or sell the motor vehicle. Change of ownership must be done through TIMS and the taxes due on change of ownership paid.

4. Motor vehicle record search

This will enable you search who owns which motor vehicle. This is especially useful as you embark on buying a vehicle as you want to establish true ownership. It is also needed for insurance purposes.

5. Application for smart DL

The next generation driving license captures the drivers bio data and other details and stores it in an electronic chip set. This smart DL is replacing the old booklet driving license. You can only get the smart DL through TIMS account.

6. Application for duplicated logbook

This will usually happen when you have lost your original logbook and you need a duplicate one. There are procedures to be followed but this has to be done through TIMS account.

7. Application for reflective number plate

When one’s vehicles’ number plates get damaged, they should not make another set of number plates on their own. You need to get government approved license plates. You can only apply for a reflective plates through the TIMS account.
